Applegreen Planning Appeal For Dromoland Site Refused

Having intially been turned down in March, an appeal lodged by forecourt retailer Applegreen for planning permission for an €8 million motorway stop near the five-star Dromoland Castle in county Clare has been refused.

The proposed development consisted of a four-pump forecourt and two-pump HCV forecourt, a 1,400 square metres amenities building to contain a shop, five cafés/restaurants and ancillary areas, and parking for 184 cars and 25 HCVs.

The appeals board determined the site had not been identified for use as a Motorway Service Area in either the National Road Authority’s policy or in Clare County’s development plan, and that development could result in an “adverse precedent”. The board was concerned also about the sustainable development of the area.

The ruling comes after Bord Pleanála’s refusal to give planning permission to Supermac’s for a Barack Obama-style plaza in the area last month.
