Did you know…The price of food and non-alcoholic beverages fell by 2.9% in February, compared to the same month last year, according to the latest Consumer Price Index from the CSO? Prices on average, as measured by the CPI, were 0.5% lower in February compared with February 2014. The category saw declines due to 'lower prices across a range of products such as meat, vegetables and bread & cereals', the CSO said.

Did you know… The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has announced that the proposed takeover of payments provider Payzone by Semeral Ltd has entered the Phase 1 Submissions phase? Semeral is a private company ultimately owned by the Carlyle Group asset management firm. Submissions on the proposed takeover can be submitted until March 20.

Did you know... SuperValu lent its support to a campaign to prevent on-street drinking in Temple Bar on St Patrick’s Day? Signs were placed around Temple Bar which read, “Raise a glass this St Patricks Day. Don’t lower the tone. Please remember on-street drinking is prohibited in Temple Bar.” The sign was branded with Dublin City Council and Temple Bar Company logos along with the retailer’s emblem. Did you know… Independent News And Media saw a 4% rise in its operating profit last year, to €34 million, according to accounts just filed? The owner of The Irish Independent spent €9.3 million on various restructuring costs last year, which included redundancies across its titles. It boosted its advertising by 0.8% versus the previous year, and saw substantial growth in its digital audience, which included a peak of 12.8 million users logging onto its websites in October. It also reduced its debts to €89.3 million.

Did you know… The founder of Good Food Ireland, Margaret Jeffares, was invited to the White House by President Barack Obama for St Patrick’s Day. Wexford-based Good Food Ireland was set up in 2006 as a way to promote Irish food and Irish food tourism. “I’m hugely honoured to have received the invitation from the President and will be flying the flag for Irish food and good local food places at these events,” Jeffares commented.

Did you know… Irish premium spirits brand Wild Geese Premium Rum has won the Silver Medal at the Global Rum Masters 2015 in London? The Wild Geese won for its entry in the ‘Dark up to 7-year Old’ category. The range has now been voted Best Irish Whiskey three times. Andre Levy, Chairman of its distributors Protege International said, “The essence of the Wild Geese brand identity is the heritage, pride and emotional connection that resonates historically and today among the Irish diaspora the world over.”

Did you know… 77% of consumers believe it is ‘acceptable’ to break lent on St. Patrick’s Day? According to a survey by Farmbake over half (56%) will break their lent for their favourite cake, with almost a third (30%) doing so for chocolate. Only 17% cited that they would feel guilty about breaking their lent on Patrick’s Day, with 94% saying it was overall a positive celebration of Irish culture both at home and abroad.
