The 2018 National Dairy Conference Takes Place This Week

The theme of this year's 2018 National Dairy Conference is 'Making Dairy Farming More Sustainable’.

The event will take place at Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork, tomorrow (27 November) and at Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone, on Wednesday (28 November).

The conference will kick off with welcome speeches by Teagasc regional managers Billy Kelleher (Cork), and Tom Kellegher (Athlone).

The first session will discuss opportunities for Irish grass-fed milk products, dealing with weather risks (with examples from a turbulent 2018), and will offer new insights into the feeding value of grazed pasture.

The second session will commence by looking at Australia, and how they manage all calves to a high welfare standard. It will also examine the new Dairy Beef Index.

Guests will then attend three from six available workshops; Managing our GHG and ammonia emissions targets, Grassland decisions made easy, Coping with the spring workload, Contract heifer rearing, Building fodder reserves in 2019, and Making our dairy farms better places to work.
