Aldi Doubles Fairtrade Tea Sales In Ireland With 27M Cups Sold In 2018

Aldi Ireland has revealed that, following the launch of its McGrath’s Fairtrade Reserve Tea, that Fairtrade tea sales in Ireland have doubled in 2018.

Last year the German discount retailer sold roughly 27 million cups of Fairtrade tea, more than any other Irish retailer.

Aldi’s McGrath’s Fairtrade Reserve Tea now accounts for over 20% of its black tea sales.

Fairtrade Demand

McGrath’s Fairtrade Reserve Tea is grown and harvested in Kenya by members of the Kenyan Tea Development Association, which currently has a membership of over half a million small-scale farmers.

The extra premium generated by supplying Aldi’s McGrath’s Fairtrade Reserve amounts to over €50,000 per year, much of which is invested into community development projects, Aldi said.

Aside from Fairtrade tea, Aldi also achieved strong sales growth across its entire Fairtrade range in 2018.

Aldi sold over 425,000 packs of its Specially Selected Fairtrade Colombian Instant Coffee, and over 2 million organic Fairtrade Bananas.

In 2016 Aldi became the first retailer in Ireland to buy 100% of its bananas from sustainable sources.

The retailer also revealed plans to introduce a range of Fairtrade Easter Eggs in store over the coming weeks.
