Dunnes Stores Closes Almost All Remaining British Stores

Dunnes Stores has effectively pulled out of Britain, after closing all of its stores in Scotland and almost all of its English branches in recent months, reports the Sunday Independent.

The retailer shut its second-last store in England on Saturday, leaving it with just one remaining branch in Northampton.

Dunnes had five stores in operation in Scotland and six in the north of England less than three years ago. However, reports suggest that the potential cost of Brexit has driven the retailer to forego this market.

Seeking Bidders

Earlier this year the Irish retailer was reportedly seeking bidders for its six-storey Sauchiehall Street store in Glasgow after closing its doors four months previous.

At the same time, Dunnes closed a long-standing store in Clydebank’s Clyde Shopping Centre.

At the end of January, 2018 it was believed that CBRE was selling the 4,300 sq metre art deco store, which has been dubbed 'one of the best pitches on Glasgow’s prime shopping street'.

Dunnes Stores currently ranks number one in Ireland, with 23.1% of the market share, according to the latest Kantar Worldpanel figures.
