Freight Transport Group Calls For Communication Of No-Deal Plans

Freight Transport Association Ireland (FTAI) has called on the government to advance and clearly communicate contingency plans for a no-deal Brexit.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, FTAI General Manager Aidan Flynn said that he felt the government was unprepared for a no-deal scenario, warning that the country’s supply chain will face significant threats.

“A no-deal Brexit would have a seismic impact on the UK’s trading environment and in turn, the freight distribution and logistics sector on both sides of the Irish Sea.

“If the UK leaves the EU without an agreement in place it could cause major disruption to our integrated, interdependent supply chains.”

Clarity

It has called on the government not only to provide contingency plan details, but also for it to confirm, clarify and publish the number of trained veterinary inspectors available to commence work in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

It also called to see its traffic management plans to deal with increased traffic volumes in Irish ports.

“It is vital that enforcement authorities take a pragmatic approach to regulatory requirements for trade for a third country if no deal is reached between the UK and the EU,” Flynn added.
