Spanish Fresh Produce In Short Supply: Reports

The Spanish fresh produce sector has been fettered of late by strong rainfall, according to reports.

Goods such as citrus fruits, strawberries and vegetables are in short supply in Spain as a result of this unprecedented weather, as harvests have been precluded by floods.

Valencia has been hit hardest by the torrential rain, with losses estimated to stand at present at €4 million.

One fresh produce manager was quoted as saying on freshplaza.com, “Most of the time, after such a storm, the harvest is carried out under far-from-optimal moisture conditions. Ultimately, this results in the appearance of mould and moisture issues that appear days after the fruit has been harvested.

“For this reason, it is very important to inform importers about the fruit's condition and explain the problems they may face if they wish to receive the goods before it is advisable.”
