Island Seafoods Recognised At Green Awards

Island Seafoods has won both the Green Seafood Business Award and the overall Green Business of the year award at the Green Awards, held at the DoubleTree Hilton, Dublin, earlier this week.

Family-run Island Seafoods, based in Killybegs, Donegal, has been part of the green movement for many years and in that time has implemented changes throughout its facilities to become more sustainable, including the development of a hydroelectric power plant that generates 65% of the company’s electricity.

As a member of Bord Bia’s Origin Green initiative, it has listed further electricity reduction, water reduction and community interaction as its key goals for the next five years.

Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) praised Island Seafoods for not only scooping an award in its own category, but for also beating blue chip companies such as Coca-Cola and Glanbia, as well as an array technology companies, to take the overall award.

Donal Buckley, BIM’s Business Development & Innovation Director explained, “Island Seafoods took part in our Green Seafood Business Programme and they were a pleasure to work with, as they already had a strong green company policy in place.”

“They are worthy recipients for the Green Seafood Business Award, but to win the overall Green Business Award is not only a great result for Island Seafoods but for the overall Irish seafood sector.”
