Ibec Calls For National Effort To Address Brexit Challenge

Ibec said the Government's Brexit approach, as set out in a recently published report, 'captures a range of key business concerns' and that an national effort is now needed to avoid a damaging Brexit divorce, according to a statement it published today (3 May.)

It also outlined that uncertainty still remains for Irish business.

Danny McCoy, CEO, Ibec said: "Despite the explicit recognition by both the EU and UK of the unique risks that Brexit poses to Ireland, for business massive uncertainty remains. A large and dangerous gap exists between current UK objectives and what is realistically possible within the parameters of the EU negotiating guidelines."

The group that represents Irish business also said that avoiding a major early clash over EU-UK exit term is crucial so that 'substantial' and 'constructive' trade talks can begin.

"It is vital that shared EU-UK economic interests inform the approach to negotiations, Political posturing needs to give way to pragmatism, and this needs to happen quickly. A far-reaching free trade deal with minimal trade barriers is the goal, but fair competition must also underpin any new relationship. The government must continue to work closely with business to identify detailed, ambitious and pragmatic ways to overcome the considerable challenges ahead." McCoy added.
