Ikea Trials Veggie Hot Dog

Ikea has announced it is trialling a vegetarian hot dog at its in-store restaurant in Malmö, Sweden, with plans for a Europe-wide roll out in August.

The Swedish furniture retailer is adding the ‘Veggie hot dog’ to its Ikea bistro range as part of its goal to include more plant-based ingredients in its food offer.

"Ikea Food is testing a Veggie hot dog in the Ikea Malmö store in Sweden! If you're around, try it and tell us what you think of it," the retailer announced on Instagram.

The retailer plans to roll out the final version of the veggie dog to Ikea stores across Europe from August 2018, with plans to expand it beyond Europe at a later stage.

Work In Progress

While the recipe as such does not contain animal products, the retailer said it cannot yet secure that all additives are 100% vegan in the prototype.

The retailer said that “for this prototype and test production we cannot yet secure that all additives are 100% vegan. It’s a work in progress!”

Ikea’s in-store restaurant already offers vegan meatballs, along with a range of vegan and vegetarian food from its store, such as vegan-friendly drinks, cereal, candy, chips, jellies, coffee, crackers, and a rhubarb and raspberry crumble.
