Irish Grocery Market Posts Best Performance In Five Years

Lidl was the best performer in the Irish supermarket industry in the 12 week period to 11 October, according to the latest supermarket share figures from Kantar Worldpanel.

The discounter increased its sales by 9.8% and also improved its market share to 8.8% in the period. Each basket in Lidl contained on average two additional items when compared with the same period last year, Kantar said.

Outside of the discounters, Dunnes posted the strongest performance during the period, with sales growth of 4.7% and an increased share of the market to 23.2%. The supermarket can thank its continued  push of the 'Shop And Save' vouchering campaign with contributing to its eleventh successive period of growth.

The  figures also show a year-on-year growth in sales of 2.1% across the Irish grocery market - the sector's best performance in over five years.

Tesco has retained its position as the number one supermarket in the country, boasting a market share of 24.5%, however, Super Valu is hot on its heels with a share of 24.4%.

Commenting on the new figures, Director at Kantar Worldpanel David Berry said: “With the countdown to Christmas now underway and seasonal items appearing on the shelves, the battle to win during this vital season is on.

“Intense competition means that consumers are already seeing a range of strong offers as retailers try to outdo each other on price and quality, and this will only continue as Christmas approaches.”
