Did You Know … Ireland is lagging behind other EU nations when it comes to eating the recommended amount of fruit and veg? According to IrishExaminer.ie, the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Comprehensive European Food Consumption Database 2016 shows that Irish people consume just 225g of fruit and vegetables on average per person per day, less than half the national recommended amount of 500g.

Did You Know … Dublin airport’s shopping concept, The Loop has launches its first Spirit of Gin festival? The festival will showcase over 50 different gins including many new Irish brands, and takes place at The Loop throughout August and September.

Did You Know … Marmite is the most seized item at by airport security at London City Airport? The airport has revealed that Marmite is the number one prohibited branded food item its security teams confiscate from travellers’ hand luggage. In response, Marmite is set to take over the security gate at the East London location, to offer passengers the chance to swap their prohibited jars for a travel-friendly sized 70g pack.

Did You Know … Sales of coconut-based beauty products in theUK grew by 23% to £12 million in the year ending 10 June 2017? According to IRI, there has been particularly strong growth in the haircare and personal care categories, with combined sales of more than £11 million a year.

Did You Know … Nestlé is opening a new KitKat factory in Japan to cater for the growing demand for exotic varieties of the chocolate bar? Bloomberg reports that while that Japan now has the second largest KitKat consumption in the world, and has become famous for selling unusual flavours including wasabi, matcha, green tea, and sake.

Did You Know … Research by Bord Bia has found that 60% of Irish adults find food labels and nutritional information difficult to understand? The PERIscope study also revealred that 88% of Irish adults recognise that healthy eating is important, though only 33% say they eat a healthy diet.

Did You Know … Tipperary Boutique Distillery has announced the first distillation of the barley grown on its own farm at Ballindoney, in Co. Tipperary? Taste.ie reports that the successful distillation took place at an established Irish distillery keen to encourage boutique brands, which says it will only ever produce small quantities of home-grown barley and subsequent whiskey yields.
