Milk Sales Up Almost 2% In March 2018: CSO

The latest figures from the Central Statistics Office revealed an increase in the total volume of milk sold for human consumption in March.

Excluding imported products, the total volume of milk sold for human consumption rose to 47.2 million litres, an increase of 1.7% compared to the same period in 2017.

Whole milk sales increased by 3.2%, to 28.6 million litres, while skimmed and semi-skimmed milk sales fell by 0.5%, to 18.7 million litres.

Butter products sold for human consumption was down by 5.2% to 19,250 tonnes and skimmed milk powder also fell by 14.5% to 4,700 tonnes.

Domestic milk intake by creameries and pasteurisers was estimated at 613.9 million litres for March 2018, a 1.1% decrease compared to the same period last year.

Domestic intake has increased, however, on a quarterly basis. Compared to quarter one in 2017, milk intake rose by 2.5% to 1,069 litres.
