Old Jameson Distillery Revamp to Boost Whiskey Tourism

Ireland’s growing whiskey tourism industry received a further lift with news that Irish Distillers plans to spend €11m redeveloping the Old Jameson Distillery in Dublin’s Smithfield. To facilitate the refurbishment, the distillery will close on August 31 and will re-open in March 2017.

Jean-Christophe Coutures, chairman and chief executive of Irish Distillers, said four million people had visited the distillery since it opened as a visitor attraction in 1997. Commenting on the plans, he said; “We’ve enlisted the world’s best experience designers and complemented that with a 100 per cent Irish contracting team who will work together to deliver on our vision.”

The project’s design contract was awarded to BRC Imagination Arts, the world-leading agency that helped create World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta, and the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin. Construction will begin in September, led by Dublin-based TOTP Architects and Flynn Management & Contractors, with approximately 100 people employed to complete the work.
