Organic Wine Sales Forecast To Reach 85.7M Cases By 2022

Organic wine is forecast to reach a total of 87.5 million cases globally by 2022, according to new research from IWSR Drinks Market Analysis.

The group recently released its IWSR Organic Wine Report, which also revealed that organic wine will achieve a 9.2% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2017 to 2022.

It found that while organic wine is still a relatively small subsection of the wine industry, consumer demand will provide a major boost in the coming years.

Slowly Increasing

“Overall, total still wine volume is increasing slightly but remains largely flat, while the organic wine market is forecasted to reach 87.5m cases by 2022,” said Mark Meek, IWSR’s chief executive.

“Much of that growth is being driven by Europe, which will account for 78% of the global organic wine market by 2022. The Americas will represent about 12% of total organic wine consumption.”

The total organic area under vine, the report shows, has increased by 234% since 2007 and in 2017 surpassed 400,000 hectares.

The European Union defines wine as ‘organic’ if it is produced from organic grapes or from oenological techniques and substances authorised for organic wine.

While overall total wine consumption in the UK is in decline, organic wine volume is expected to post a CAGR of 9.4% from 2017 to 2022.

In the US, organic wine is slowly taking share from non-organic as total still wine consumption is increasing. It forecasts a 1% CGAR growth from 2017 to 2022.
