Musgrave Group Leads Retail Sector In 'Top 1000 Companies' Report

Musgrave Group is the highest placed grocer in the 2015 edition of the Top 1000 Companies, published by The Irish Times.

The Cork-based retail group is ranked 17th on the list, with a turnover of €4.83 billion (year to end 2013).

Dunnes Stores places 24th, with an estimated turnover of €3.4 billion, with Topaz ranked 26th (€3.05 billion) and Tesco 30th (€2.56 billion).

Other retail groups to place high up the list include BWG Group (59th, €1.2 billion), Aldi (86th, estimated €828 million), Applegreen (89th, €805 million), Henderson Group (92nd, €778 million) and Lidl (93rd, €777 million).

According to the paper, 43% of retail businesses featured in the report grew their turnover in their most recent financial year, while 15% reported a loss.

A number of family-owned retail groups also appear on the list, with the Caulfield McCarthy Group placing 366th (estimated €120 million), Griffin Central in 699th (estimated €43 million) and JCs Supermarket in 748th among those making an appearance.

The highest placed food and drink business in the list is Kerry Group, which places 14th (€5.76 billion). The list is headed up by Microsoft (€19.8 billion).
