A spokesperson for Tesco Ireland has told Checkout that the retailer is 'considering' a Labour Court recommendation on pay increases and bonuses for its employees.
At the weekend, the Irish Independent reported that Tesco told its staff that it 'cannot afford to pay' a bonus to many of its Irish employees, which was expected in December, due to a drop off in performance last year.
The Labour Court has directed the retailer to pay the bonus to staff, as well as implement a 2% pay rise.
"Tesco is currently considering the recent Labour Court recommendation on pay and bonus," the Tesco spokesperson told Checkout.
Mandate's Brendan O'Hanlon commented at the weekend that the fact that Tesco doesn't provide profit figures for its Irish operations "doesn't help anyone. Given that they are the second biggest retailer in the country with around a 25pc market share, I believe that they are extremely profitable and that they are in a position to pay and that it is a case of 'wont pay' rather than 'can't pay'."
