The number of insolvencies in the Wholesale & Retail sector is down 30% on the same period last year, according to the latest Business Barometer report from Solocheck. The report also found that between 1st January and 28th March this year, company insolvencies dropped to 227, from 275 in Q1 of last year. It also found that the number of company start-ups increased by 13% compared to the same period last year.
ABP Food Group is set to buy Polish beef processor, Skłodowscy-Tykocin. The Sunday Times reports that ABP Poland has notified the country’s competition authority of the proposed takeover. The sale price in the proposed deal has not been publicly revealed.

Heineken’s Marketing Director, Sharon Walsh has told Independent.ie that innovation is key to the success of the beer industry. She noted that growing categories like craft beers and spirits mean that people want variety. She said that to meet this demand, Heineken has “aligned the business around a new five-year consumer-centric vision, with innovation at its core”.
Fyffes has acquired Canadian mushroom business Highline Produce for €97.7 million. IrishTimes.com reports that the fruit company’s shares rose by 8% following the announcement, and that this is funding the purchase through new and existing bank debt.
There is speculation that Dunbia is in talks with UK firm 2 Sisters over a possible tie-up. It is also rumoured that Rosderra Meats has expressed interest in acquiring Dunbia’s pig processing division.
The Labour Court has advised Tesco Ireland to compensate staff at its stores in Bailieborough, Co, Cavan, and Tallaght, Co. Dublin. Mandate brought the case to the court after Tesco offered 15 months’ worth of back payments to the affected sales assistants, TheJournal.ie has reported.
Planning permission has been granted by the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council for an extension to the Blackrock-based Frascati Shopping Centre. IrishTimes.com says the development will include a significant increase in retail space, and new parking arrangements.
Aldi has earned ten accolades at the recent Prima Baby Awards for its Mamia range, which includes nappies, wipes, baby food, toiletries and laundry detergents. Both its Newborn and Ultra Dry Nappies took gold in the nappy categories, while its Sensitive Baby Wipes picked up Gold in the wet wipe category.
Tesco has announced that it will pay British dairy farmers 28.69 pence per litre for fresh milk from May to July, through the Tesco Sustainable Dairy Group. Tesco says that the new price is 1.39ppl lower than the price for the previous six months, but it is still a market-leading figure.
This year’s Spar Great Ireland Run will take place on Sunday, 10 April in Dublin’s Phoenix Park, featuring for the first time, a 5km route for beginner-level runners. The event will also give thirty-two runners the chance to become County Captains and lead their teams in the All Ireland County Challenge.
A study by the London School of Economics has concluded that Ireland would “suffer the largest proportional losses” of any country after Britain if a ‘Brexit’ happens.
