Irish dairy products won a variety of awards at the 2016 International Cheese Awards. Carbery Group won 17 awards, among them three gold medals, and Northern Irish processor Dale Farm took home 21 awards. Dairygold and Glanbia Ltd. were also recognised with prizes.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland issued 12 closure orders and one prohibition order on businesses in July. Five restaurants, four take aways, two food stalls, a public house, a butcher's, and a wholesaler were found in breach of food safety legislation.

The National Dairy Council Ireland launched a new Powered By Dairy campaign this week. The campaign targets sports enthusiasts and emphasises the protein-rich qualities of dairy.

Food company Ballymaloe is bringing its products to Northern Ireland for the first time. The firm has secured a partnership with Valeo Foods to distribute its goods to a range of convenience stores across Northern Ireland.

A study by the University of Leicester has found a 122% increase in theft among shoppers using self-service checkout tills. The study looked at shopper behaviour in the UK, the US, Holland, and Belgium, and used data from 12 million shopping trips there.

Food seasoning specialist Redbrook has been acquired for €40m. Israeli firm Frutarom acquired the Dublin company and have included a mechanism for potential increased payment to the sale.

The shortlist for the Irish Quality Food and Drink 2016 has been announced. Over two hundred producers compete in more than one hundred categories. The winners will be named at the Awards night on September 8.
