Dunnes Reportedly Set To Lease Or Sell Vacant Stores

It has been reported that Dunnes Stores, one of Ireland’s leading retailers, is getting set to sell or lease a number of vacant sites it owns across the country.

According to the Irish Independent, the retail giant will act to ensure the vacant sites will not be sold to competitors, but it is still a move widely welcomed by the industry.

'A Positive Development'

The Irish Independent highlighted that Dunnes had come under heavy criticism over the years for the size and scale of its vacant lots held in key locations across the country.

The retailer has also often clashed with authorities over placing some stores on the vacant sites register.

David Fitzsimons, CEO of Retail Excellence and an outspoken critic of Dunnes vacant sites, said that this was a very welcome development “in context of the revival of towns around the country”.

“In the past, these vacant sites were a drag on town centres so this is a very positive development,” he told the Irish Independent.
