Electric Car Sales Soar In Early 2019 As Interest In Petrol, Diesel Falls

Over 1,800 new electric cars were registered between January and May this year, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

This is almost three times the amount sold within the same period in 2018, when 490 new electric cars were licensed.

There was 214 used or imported electric cars sold in this period, which is down 23.5% from the same period in 2018.

New hybrid cars also experienced a big gain in this period in 2019, selling 6,900 cars compared to 4,700 in 2018.

Environment Conscious?

Both Petrol and Diesel both failed to post positive sales growth in the five-month period this year.

New petrol sales growth was mostly flat in 2019, selling just 21 cars short of 30,000, while it barely broke this figure in 2018, selling 30,098.

New diesel cars saw a large drop in sales, selling only 35,000 cars in 2019, compared to 43,987 cars in 2018.

There has been a noted decrease in petrol and diesel cars at the expense of hybrid and petrol cars.

In the first five months of 2019, just under half of all new private cars licensed were diesel, compared with 55.5% in the same period for 2018.
