Ireland's First Students Of New Distilling Degree Course Graduate

Ireland’s first students of a new degree course in Brewing and Distilling graduated on Saturday, 19 October from Technological University Dublin.

This degree programme will serve as an important first step towards the establishment of a National Research Institute for Brewing and Distilling in Ireland and is underpinned by firm support from market-leading industry partners, Pernod Ricard and Diageo.

The course was initially launched in September 2017, and is spearheaded by Marie Byrne of Dublin-based distillers Chinnery Spirits’.

Future-Skills Gap

Inspired both by her own Science Degree from UCD and wide-ranging experience in the Irish whiskey industry, Byrne identified a future-skills gap in the Irish Brewing and Distilling industry brought on rapid growth in the sector, as well as exciting opportunities for new strategic alliances in R&D.

“This is a hugely significant step forward in the evolution of the Irish drinks industry," Byrne said.

The BSc has provided the candidates with the necessary scientific and engineering skills to pursue careers in both well established and new breweries and distilleries.

"This degree course with its unrivalled education, research projects and work placements is the first and most crucial step towards addressing current skills gaps.”
