Five winners of a recent Mace Unsung Heroes initiative recently received a special video call from Mace Ambassador, Ireland and Lions rugby player Johnny Sexton.
As a special acknowledgement of their selflessness, the Unsung Heros also received a voucher from Mace for their good deed during the COVID-19 lockdown, the retailer said.
Mace said that it recently ran a community initiative inviting customers and the general public to nominate someone who had 'gone the extra mile' in their local community during the pandemic.
The retailer noted that it was 'inundated with stories of some amazing good deeds done by people'.
The winners gestures of goodwill to their local communities included children selling homemade ice-cream to raise funds for Down Syndrome Ireland, tending to a beloved grandfather’s prized lawn and garden and sending weekly videos to a loved-one cocooning in a nursing home in order to lift spirits.
'One very special call was that to frontline worker Stephen McDonald. As well as working on the frontline every day, Stephen made sure to care for the family’s elderly neighbour by bringing him his meals on a daily basis,' Mace highlighted.
Another standout gesture included Mace Killinarden who sponsored 150 hot meals each week to residents in their community who needed some extra support.
Commenting, Daniel O’Connell, sales director Mace said: “We are very proud of the community spirit shown by all our wonderful Mace shoppers during this crisis. We were thrilled to be in a position to acknowledge some of those gestures and to organise to have a superstar like Johnny [Sexton] make a call to some of our community heroes was an added bonus.”
