Off-Trade Alcohol Sales Surge By 59% Year On Year

Off-trade alcohol sales in Ireland surged by 59% in the week ending 10 May, compared to the same period in 2019, research showed.

Research conducted by Nielsen on behalf of Checkout showed significant growth in frozen food, which increased by 25%, ambient grocery was up by 15% and fresh produce increased by 14% during the period.

In the week ending 10 May, sales of household bleach increased by 32%, disinfectant liquids by 249% and soap sales spiked by 104%.

"Overall FMCG sales reached €333 million this week, which is 12.5% higher compared to the same week in 2019,"

Products That Declined

"However, other product classes within these categories which saw growth earlier in the pandemic due to stockpiling are now seeing a year on year decline as shoppers use up stock which they purchased," said Nicole Farren, senior account manager, Retailer Service, Nielsen.

This has resulted in a year on year decline for liquid detergents sales which fell by 17%, baby wipes decreased by 17% and shower gels by 4%.
