Soaring Rioja Sales In Ireland Bring Educational Masterclasses For Trade

Wines from Rioja is organising two masterclasses hosted by John Wilson from The Irish Times, on Tuesday 19 November at The Dean Hotel in Dublin.

Ireland is amongst Rioja’s top 10 export markets – beating Mexico this year to secure its place on the international leader board.

The masterclasses will feature 12 different wines across a variety of styles including Unoaked Whites, Oaked Whites, Rosado, Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva, and Premium Generic wines over €15.00.

The wines featured during the masterclasses have Irish importers, but there is also an opportunity to taste a select number of unrepresented wines in a free-pour setting directly following each masterclass.

The masterclasses are aimed at the on and off trade, offering an opportunity to discover the current styles that Rioja has to offer.

Red Rioja is the region’s most popular style, but white and rosé are also on the rise.

Since 2007, producers have been permitted to grow international white varieties including Sauvignon Blanc, Verdejo, and Chardonnay, which consumers recognise and are willing to try.

The region, seeped in history, is in the process of a significant change – for the first time in the history of Spain’s flagship region, wines will be allowed to be labelled and identified by their individual vineyard, under the new Vinedos Singulares indication.

The move, introduced in 2017, will see the first wines enter the Irish market in spring 2020.

The future of Rioja in Ireland is bright, especially at the close of the 2019 harvest season.

Favourable weather conditions, outstanding health of the vines, and low yields “will make 2019 a unique vintage, and although it is still early to look at the results, we have high hopes that the vintage will be recorded as a memorable year in the history of Rioja wine,” shares Pablo Franco, director of the Control Chamber of the Denomination.
