Tesco Leads Irish Fresh Food Suppliers To Tackle Food Waste

Led by Tesco Ireland 12 of Ireland’s largest fresh food suppliers, including Aryzta, Country Crest, Keelings, Total Produce, and Manor Farm have committed to tackle food waste.

At a global level, they will join other Irish Tesco own-label suppliers who previously signed up to this commitment with Tesco group including: Hilton (UK&ROI), Kepak, Kerry, Greencore and Ornua. Globally, Unilever UK & ROI has also become one of eleven branded suppliers to also join up to this leading commitment for the first time.

The initiative is a part of a Global movement aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, to help halve food waste, from farm to fork, by 2030, the retailer explained.

Welcoming the initiative as he attends the 2019 United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York, Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Richard Bruton said: “A key part of the Government’s Climate Action Plan is tackling food waste and it is an area in which business can really make a tangible, measurable change."

The Tesco own-label suppliers that have agreed to working in partnership with Tesco on this initiative are:

Aryzta (bakery) - Dublin
Stapleton’s (bakery) - Tipperary
Panelto (bakery) - Longford
Country Crest (produce) - Dublin
Total Produce (produce) - Dublin
Keelings (produce) - Dublin
Manor Farm (poultry) – Cavan / Meath
Ballymaguire Foods (ready meals) – Dublin
Western Brand (poultry) - Mayo
O’Brien Fine Foods (cooked meats) - Kildare
ABP (meat) - Louth
Hilton Meats (meat) - Louth

This move is part of Tesco’s No Time for Waste initiative which aims to minimise food waste and increase surplus food donations from Tesco stores nationwide by 2020.

"As a food business, we, along with our suppliers, will inevitably have a level of food waste in our business," said Kari Daniels, CEO, Tesco Ireland.

"That’s why it is so important that we’re tackling waste right across the supply chain – both at branded and own-brand levels.
