Tesco Ireland has donated over 1.5 million meals or 677 tonnes of surplus food to charity since July 2014, according to IrishTimes.com. France has recently introduced a law that makes the donation of surplus food mandatory, and there is talk of Ireland introducing similar legislation.
Members of European Parliament have once again clashed with the EU Commission over GM crops, FoodNavigator.com reports. MEPs voted to oppose the importation of three GM soybeans, mainly over concerns that introducing the crops may prove harmful to the EU public. They also said that the Commission’s proposed authorisation was “not consistent with Union law”.
Lidl has launched a new advertising campaign centred on its sponsorship of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association, which will involve a national broadcast campaign across TV, outdoor and digital formats. The discounter has invested €1.5 million in the association and is now recognised as its Official Retail Partner.
An Bord Pleanala has refused planning permission for a new supermarket in Ardee, The Drogheda Independent reports. The site is deemed to be too close to an important junction linking the N2, Ardee Town, and the M1, and planners are worried that the proposed development would “interfere with the safety and free flow of traffic”.
Greene Farm Foods has secured a €300,000 investment from Enterprise Ireland, Independent.ie reports. The Westmeath-based poultry producer will reportedly use the investment to develop more products and target new markets.
Northern Irish company Broighter Gold has launched Liquid Gold rapeseed oil, a product that uses 24 carat edible gold and is recommended for finishing dishes such as fish and salads. Liquid Gold comes in 50ml bottles and is especially aimed at foodservice operations outside Northern Ireland.
The shortlist for the Waterford Business Awards has been announced, Waterford-Today.ie reports. In the retail category, Caulfield’s SuperValu, Lloyd’s Hair, and Sienna Home Furnishings have been nominated. Food producers Pip ‘n’ Pear and Lismore Food Company are up for the Best New Business Award.
Tetra Pak has announced that it expects to deliver more than 100 million of its Tetra Rex Bio-based packages in 2016. The packaging is made entirely of plant-based materials and is widely used in Finland, Sweden and Norway by companies such as Arla Foods, TINE, Valio, and Vermlands Mejeri.
