Retail Ireland Welcomes 2012 Revenue Seizures

Retail Ireland has welcomed Revenue's preliminary figures for seizures in 2012, which included 95.6 million cigarettes and 876,887 litres of illegal fuel.

The group said that the scale of the lost tax revenue as a result of the sale of illegal and counterfeit goods meant it would make economic sense to invest more in tackling the problem.

Retail Ireland Chariman, Frank Gleeson said: "Major seizures are welcome but a lot of illegal activity goes undetected. Additional resources are required to tackle the problem and much tougher sentences are needed as a deterrent. Consumers must also be made more aware of the economic and social consequences of buying illegal goods. The retail sector, already under severe pressure because of the collapse in consumer spending, is the worst affected by the sale of counterfeit and smuggled goods. Retail sales have fallen by over 30% since the start of the recession and thousands of jobs have been lost. It is vital that the sector is not further squeezed by illegal criminal activity."
