Retail Sales Recover In February After Poor Start To The Year

Retail sales recovered from a relatively weak January, rising by 2.1% in February - despite increasing Brexit fears.

This is according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office, which revealed that February 2019 sales were over 5% higher than that of February 2018.

In January, the value of retail sales fell to its lowest rate of growth since March 2018.

Motor sales excluded, there was a 1.4% increase in the volume of retail sales compared to the previous months, and a 5.3% increase in annual terms.

Category Sales

Non-Specialised Stores, including supermarkets, saw value sales increase by 1.3% in February when compared to January, and rose by 3.2% compared to February 2018.

In volume terms, sales rose by 2.5% against January and by 3.8% compared to February 2018.

Food, Beverages, and Tobacco sales rose by 0.2% in value terms when compared to January, and rose by 3.1% against February 2018.

The volume of Food, Beverages, and Tobaccos sales rose by 0.6% against January, and by 4.7% compared to February 2018.
