Aldi Increases Fairtrade Roses Sales By 20% In 2016

Aldi Ireland has reported today (February 28) it achieved a year-on-year increase of 20% in sales of its Fairtrade Roses in 2016. Aldi made the announcement following the launch of Fairtrade Fortnight, which takes place 27 February until 12 March, 2017.

Aldi is now the largest volume seller of Fairtrade flowers in ireland, with 2 million Fairtrade roses sold by the retailer in 2016. Aldi is the only purchaser of Ethiopian Fairtrade flowers, with all its Fairtrade Roses purchased from the Sher Project, the largest Ethiopian flower growing farm. Aldi is currently offering a Fairtrade Mixed Bouquet for €7.99 to highlight Fairtrade Fortnight.

Aldi experienced strong sales across its entire Fairtrade range in 2016 underlining the market for fairly priced quality Fairtrade products in Ireland. Over the last 12 months Aldi sold over 48 tonnes of its Specially Selected Fairtrade Colombian Instant Coffee, while it sold 400,000 bars of its Moser Roth Fairtrade Chocolate, representing a 50% increase on 2015 sales. Aldi has also witnessed a strong customer response to its McGrath’s Fairtrade Tea, with over 3,000,000 cups brewed using Aldi tea bags since its introduction in October 2016.

Aldi has stated that it is also a supporter of products that are certified to Rainforest Alliance and UTZ standards that create better social and environmental conditions for growers in its supply chain. Last year Aldi was the first retailer in Ireland to pledge to buy 100% of its bananas from sustainable sources.
