Casino Announces First ‘NFC Supermarket’

France's Casino Group has announced plans to open what it claims is a 'world first' in retail; a fully NFC-enabled supermarket. Due to be rolled out during the fourth quarter of 2012, shoppers at the store will be able to use shelf-edge labels equipped with NFC tags to obtain details on any of the 25,000 products on offer, as well as scan items into their basket and purchase items. The system will allow consumers an option to view their 'virtual shopping basket' as they shop to check the total amount spent, and add or remove products. Consumers will also be able to collect their shopping from a local store or choose to have it delivered.

The new supermarket is expected to open in Paris later this month. Casino also recently announced plans to rollout a new 'digital wall' concept at its stores, enabling consumers to 'buy' products by scanning QR codes on a poster, by the end of the year.
