Teagasc Launches Farming Podcast

The semi-state agri-food agency Teagasc is breaking into the booming world of podcasts by launching ‘The Dairy Edge’, a new weekly show for farmers.

Hosted by Emma-Louise Coffey, Teagasc dairy specialist, the podcast will cover the latest information, insights and opinions to improve dairy farm performance, according to Teagasc.

The first episode will have three guests joining Coffey and will focus on spring fertiliser, calving and fodder.

The Panel

In the first show, David Wall, research officer from Teagasc Johnstown Castle, talks about best practice fertiliser application during the upcoming spring period and what type of fertiliser to use in the first few months of the year.

Wall will also quantify the value of slurry in terms of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium content, according to Teagasc.

The second guest is John Leahy, dairy farmer from Athea, Co Limerick, who explains how he’s preparing for the busy spring calving period.

Leahy’s farm is classified as heavy and grazing conditions are difficult in February, so he begins calving on 10th February and from there, 90% of cows will calve within six weeks.

Fodder For Thought

This month, fodder is in short supply on some dairy farm, due to the failure to make a second cut silage or early housing that came as a result of bad weather and soil conditions last autumn.

The third guest Brian Garry, Teagasc ruminant nutrition specialist, Moorepark, joins the discussion to give tips on how to stretch forage between now and turnout to grass.

The first episode of The Dairy Edge is now available online and on mobile podcast platforms and will be broadcast every Thursday, according to Teagasc.
