Team SCA Takes Line Honours In Volvo Ocean Race

The team sponsored by global hygiene brand SCA has taken line honours in the Volvo Ocean Race, making them the first all-female crew to do so in 25 years.

The team won by leading in pole positions throughout the 647-mile race to cross the finish line in front of six all-male competitor crews, securing their victory in leg eight of the race between Lisbon, Portugal and Lorient, France

Team SCA is the fifth all-female team to compete in the Volvo Ocean Race, and the first to do so in over a decade. The crew is also the first women’s race team to have been on such equal footing with male crews.

UK and Ireland managing director of SCA, Sally Barker explained why the company, know for the Bodyform brand, decided to partner with the all-female crew, pointing out that 80% of SCA’s products are purchased by women.

“This gives SCA a natural interest in the field of hygiene and the empowerment of women and their freedom to participate fully in society – socially, educationally and professionally.

“SCA are incredibly grateful to be involved in such an exceptional project which has enabled us to raise awareness of key women’s hygiene issues on a global scale,” she added.

Speaking for the crew, British sailor Annie Lush said, “With SCA’s support, we have been able to complete this incredible event on a level playing field with the male teams, and have been incredibly successful.”

“It’s been an incredible journey and we are proud to be making a stand for the empowerment of women, everywhere!”
