The UK’s food watchdog is investigating allegations that traces of meat had been found in "meat-free" and vegan meals sold at the country's two largest supermarket chains, Tesco and Sainsbury's. The statement followed a report in The Daily Telegraph, which said an investigation by the newspaper had detected traces of turkey in a Tesco vegan macaroni ready meal and traces of pork in Sainsbury's "meat-free" meatballs.

During the week, Revenue seized a total of 315 litres of alcohol, 84,500 contraband cigarettes and 11 kgs of tobacco. The potential retail value of the alcohol, cigarettes and tobacco seized is approximately €67,200, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €52,040.

UK based discounter Poundland is making preparations to appoint administrators as it struggles to avoid collapse. The group filed a notice of intention to appoint an administrator, which will temporarily shield the retailer from its creditors. It will have 10 working days to develop a restructuring plan.

UK-based Whitbread is open to selling its Costa coffee chain or Premier Inn hotels, abandoning its original plan to spin-off the coffee business. In April it planned to dissolve Costa into a separately listed company within two years to “provide shareholders with an investment in two distinct, focused, and market-leading businesses”.

Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers’ Association and the Irish Farmers’ Association have urged co-ops and milk processors to hold their prices “at the very least” for the month of May following a turn in the market in recent weeks.
