Healthy Ireland Survey Reveals Unhealthy Behaviours Persist While Alcohol Consumption Is Declining

The Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland (ABFI) have welcomed the findings of the latest Healthy Ireland Survey commissioned by the Department of Health.

Commenting on the report’s findings Ross MacMathúna, Director of ABFI said: "These results confirm what we in the industry already know, that alcohol consumption in Ireland is declining and the vast majority of Irish consumers have a mature and responsible relationship with alcohol."

However, binge drinking is widespread among men, with 55% of men who drink consuming six or more drinks on a typical drinking occasion. Fewer than 1 in 5 (18%) women drink to this level.

According to the Healthy Ireland Survey, nearly three-quarters (73%) of the population eat fewer than five portions of fruit and vegetables daily. Three in five eat snacks every day with 42% eating 6 or more portions. 14% consume sugar sweetened drinks on a daily basis.

Between a fifth and a third of the population exhibit one of three unhealthy behaviours – binge drinking (28%), sedentary behaviour (26%) and smoking (23%).
