An Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications is set to publish a report later today calling for plans to ban alcohol sponsorship of sporting events to be rejected.
The Report on Sponsorship of Sports by the Alcohol Drinks Industry will be published by Committee vice-chairman John O'Mahony TD and members of the Committee.
The report is expected to recommend that a proposed ban on alcohol companies from sponsoring sporting events will have negative consequences for funding of Irish sport.
“Last year, proposals to curb alcohol misuse were presented by a Department of Health Steering Group which included the phasing out of alcohol sponsorship of sporting and cultural events by 2016," said O'Mahony.
"Our Committee agreed to carefully consider the particular recommendation on sponsorship of sporting events as part of our current work programme. The report we have compiled summarises these contributions and makes a series of recommendations from the Committee’s cross party membership.”
The report will be launched at a meeting in Leinster House at 11.30am this morning.
