Recent Public Health Alcohol Bill Meeting To Reconvene

Nothing concrete was implemented on the Public Health (Alcohol) Bill (PHAB) following a meeting in Seanad Eireann yesterday.

A statement issued by the Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland (ABFI) has said that yesterday's debate on the Committee Stage of the PHAB  has highlighted the need for further analysis of the Bill’s provisions to ensure its successful implementation.

Commenting on the debate in the Oireachtas, Director of ABFI Ross Mac Mathúna said: “Further debate on the Bill’s provisions is necessary before implementation to ensure it adheres to evidence based policymaking and is both practical and workable. We look forward to a calm and reasonable debate on the subject”.

The date for the reconvening is yet to be confirmed.

The Public Health (Alcohol) Bill 2015, was published by Minister for Health Leo Varadkar in December 2015. It is landmark legislation that provides a unique opportunity to tackle Ireland’s harmful relationship with alcohol.
