Jack Teeling, who left Cooley Distillery earlier this year following its buyout by Beam Global, has launched his first product as an independent distiller. Hybrid Edition 1, a blend of 10 year-old single malts from Cooley, Ireland and Bruichladdich, Scotland that has been married together in oak barrels for an additional eight years, is the first venture from Teeling Whiskey Co, and Teeling believes that the product can help regenerate the independent distillery industry in Ireland. “If there’s not that choice in the Irish whiskey category, which was once there with independent brands, there’s a risk they’ll go to Canadian, Bourbon, rum or another classification of spirit,” he explained. Rather then providing a product that can be deemed as solely Irish or Scottish, Teeling Whiskey Co. plans to offer some “interesting bottlings” of different malt whiskies from around the world. Teeling plans to launch Hybrid Edition 1 (44% abv) in the UK market initially, before targeting key European markets.
