Ardagh Group To Launch New Slim 187ml Wine Can In Europe

In a Europe first for beverage packaging, Ardagh Group is introducing a new slimline 187ml can that is specifically designed to present and protect wine and wine-based drinks.

The new can, which is set to launch in the first quarter of 2020, has a capacity of a personal wine serve of 187ml – a quarter of a standard 75cl bottle.

Ardagh said that the new can is a ‘convenient, portable, and sustainable option for canned wine and wine-based drinks’.

The Irish-headquartered metal and glass packager added that the slimline can ‘will be particularly attractive for a growing market of younger wine drinkers who are keen to try new varieties without committing to a full bottle or multipack’, as well as for those who are aware of packaging sustainability issues as part of their product choices.

Easy Transport

The new format will allow wineries to sell single-serve canned wine in new markets and in channels, supporting category growth, including overseas to the US.

According to Euromonitor, canned wine consumption is growing worldwide, and the wine-in-can market is expected to reach 366 million units over the next three years.

The fully recyclable aluminium can is airtight, lightproof and shatterproof, and features specifications to protect the quality of the wine throughout the filling, transportation and storage lifespan.

The can will also have multiple decorative options to help distinguish between a red, rosé and white wine, or enhance the can themselves by adding a matte finish.

The new stacking slimline format is perfect for retailers, Ardagh said, where space for storage and display is limited.
