JTI Ireland Launches 'The Plain Facts' Website

JTI Ireland has launched a new website, www.theplainfacts.ie, to communicate information on the proposed ‘plain packaging’ of tobacco products.

The tobacco firm said that the site 'highlights the lack of evidence in support of this measure and addresses the consequences it could have on foreign investment, legitimate retailers, and the tax losses to the government'.

“’Plain’ packaging is not as simple as it sounds”, said John Freda, General Manager of JTI Ireland. “All sides of the debate should be made available to people - they deserve to understand what this proposed legislation entails.”

Freda added that the introduction of plain packaging will not reduce the numbers of people taking up smoking: “Rather, it will increase children’s access to tobacco products as cigarettes are at least 50% cheaper on the streets than the ones sold by legitimate retailers."

JTI also said that there is currently 'no credible evidence that ‘plain’ packaging has had positive health impacts in Australia', 15 months' on from the introduction of the legislation.
