Did you know… Retail Excellence Ireland deputy chief executive Sean Murphy has told the Irish Times that suggestions that the retail industry has 'turned the corner' may be premature? Ahead of the CSO retail sales results for February, released later this week, Murphy urged businesses to look outside the Pale for a real picture of how Irish retail was performing. “Last month’s figures [for January] weren’t as hot as people were saying," he said. "Let the facts speak for themselves.”

Did you know… Diageo has launched a new TV advertising campaign for its Hop House 2013 lager, the latest product to emerge from its Brewers Project at St. James’s Gate initiative? The new commercial, which was broadcast yesterday for the first time, is voiced by Irish actor Cillian Murphy, and features Guinness brewer Peter Simpson along with fellow brewers from The Brewers Project.

Did you know… Dublin City Council is reportedly set to sell a site in Cabra to Lidl for €500,000; around €3.5 million less than it paid for the site back in 2007? According to the Herald, the contract stipulates that if planning permission is refused, both sides may pull out of the deal. The council acquired the site eight years ago with the intention to develop affordable housing.

Did you know… Popular Dublin wine shop and restaurant The Gables is closed for the next two weeks for refurbishment? According to a statement issued by the Foxrock venue, management is 'taking this opportunity to create a dedicated Tapas and Pintxos Bar at the front section of the Restaurant, improve our offering in the Restaurant itself, install Draught Craft Beer, increase the selection of wines by the glass/carafe and other smaller tweaks and changes'.

Did you know… The Carlow People reports that over €7,500 has been shared by 30 local good causes across Carlow since the launch of the Tesco Community Fund Initiative last July? Donations from the two Tesco stores in Carlow went to causes such as Carlow Home Care, Meals on Wheels and the Wheelchair Association of Carlow.

Did you know… The IFA has responded to proposals from Glanbia for a share spin out and the creation of a support fund for members, calling it a 'potentially useful funding option for farmers, and an opportunity to take advantage of the current strong market value of Glanbia plc'? "The Glanbia proposal for the share spin out provides an option for individual farmers to generate cashflow or investment financing, if required, while the proposal to create a members’ support fund will give the co-op board flexibility to respond to volatility and other pressures in the market," said IFA president Eddie Downey.

Did you know… Fuel retailer Topaz has been named one of the Deloitte Best Managed Companies award winners for the fifth year in a row? The retailer received the honor at a recent ceremony in Dublin. “Consumer confidence is recovering and as a young fully Irish owned company we have ambitious expansion plans for the future," commented Topaz marketing director Paul Candon. Did you know…Tesco UK has announced that its senior independent director Patrick Cescau will step down from the role after six years as a non-executive director? Cescau recently played a central role in the retailer’s recent board reshuffle, including leading the search for a new chairman, John Allen. Richard Cousins will take over as senior independent director on 7 April 2015.
