Key players from the food industry have gathered to commemorate the landmark €1 million worth of cost savings that the Food for Simon program has generated for the Simon Community, at an event in Dublin.
Present at the event, held at Dublin's Zaragoza tapas restaurant, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney paid tribute to the businesses that have supported Simon, even through difficult financial circumstances themselves.
"Reaching €1m savings is a fantastic achievement and this event, while an opportunity to celebrate this landmark success, it also gives us the chance to discuss new initiatives and look at how the sector can do more to help those who rely on Simon services," he said.
Supporters of the Food for Simon initiative include BWG Foods, Kellogg’s, Barry's Tea, Valeo Foods, Donnelly Fresh Foods, Nestlé, Boyne Valley, Gem, Rabobank, United Drug, LeasePlan, Topaz and Checkout magazine.
The event also played host to a 'cook-off' among members of the Food for Simon Community, and a debate on the importance of the food sector being socially responsible.
