UK Brexit Secretary David Davis has said that the European Union can't pick and choose which bits of its economic relationship with Britain it maintains and which it eliminates in any future trade deal. Writing ahead of the post-Brexit trade talks due in March, Davis described the discussions as “a deep and open exploratory dialogue to discover a new, mutually acceptable point of balance in our relationship.”

Global personal-care company Colgate-Palmolive has announced the acquisition of the two skin care brands, PCA Skin and EltaMD Skin Care. The combined purchase of approximately $100 million will enable the company to enter the professional skin-care category, while complementing its existing global personal-care businesses, such as Colgate toothpaste, Palmolive soaps and Protex soaps, according to the company.

Online retail giant Amazon had its most successful year yet in terms of private-label sales, according to data from One Click Retail. The e-commerce analytics firm estimates that Amazon generated sales of almost $450 million from its own brands in 2017, including Amazon Basics, Pinzon, Amazon Elements, Happy Belly, and Whole Foods’ 365 Everyday Value food range. 85% of those sales were from the retailer's home-care brand Amazon Basics, which includes everything from batteries to water filters.

German discount chain Lidl has opened its 600th store in Italy, a new supermarket in Palermo. The new store is also the retailer's seventh branch in the city, and its 44th in Sicily. Lidl Italia has invested over €10 million in the Sicilian capital, as part of a project that also included urban redevelopment and regeneration projects.

Northern Irish dessert specialist A Slice of Heaven is aiming to boost export sales following a recent series of industry awards. The company, based out of Newtownards, Co Down, is keen to grow its business in the Republic of Ireland, particularly in the greater Dublin Area. Founded in 2005, the company specialises in classic cakes, individual desserts, cheesecakes and tray bakes for restaurants, cafés and hotels.
