'Black Friday' For Gweedore As Largo Foods Announces Plant Closure

Donegal Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty has described the announcement that Largo Foods plans to close its Gweedore, Co. Donegal plant, with the loss of 142 jobs, as a "black Friday" for the area.

Earlier today, Largo Foods announced that it will transfer production from its Gweedore facility to its Ashbourne, Co. Meath base, and close the Donegal facility. It has commenced consultations with staff over the potential transfer of staff to Ashbourne.

It made the decision to close the plant following a 'strategic review' of its operations in Ireland and the UK.

"This news is not just devastating for the workers in the plant but for the whole community," said Doherty.

“There will be a knock on effect in the local economy with hauliers, suppliers and service providers all being impacted by this announcement."
