Drinks Industry Lends Support To National Alcohol Awareness Week

The Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland (ABFI) has welcomed Ireland’s first National Alcohol Awareness Week, which is taking place this week.

Commenting on the initiative, Acting ABFI Director Jean Doyle said, “The vast majority of Irish people consume alcohol in a moderate, and enjoyable fashion. Indeed, consumption figures in this country are declining and have fallen by 19% since the peak in 2001… However a minority of people in this country abuse alcohol and we fully agree that this needs to be addressed.”

Doyle continued: “Central to this whole debate is making the distinction between the consumption of alcohol and the misuse of alcohol. Alcohol misuse is not in the interest of the industry. Indeed, the industry has taken a major leadership role in promoting a more mature and responsible attitude towards alcohol consumption amongst consumers. We have consistently provided funding for, and have supported the highly visible campaigns from drinkaware.ie; this is the single biggest initiative to change attitudes to alcohol misuse ever undertaken in Ireland. The initiative has been developed by the Mature Enjoyment of Alcohol in Society (MEAS) and has received over €20 million investment and partnership support over the past six years.”
