ITMAC: Australia Evidence Indicates Plain Packaging Boosts Illicit Trade

The Irish Tobacco Manufacturers Advisory Committee (ITMAC) has said that a report into the illicit tobacco trade in Australia is an indication that plain packaging legislation will only serve to bolster illegal trade in this country.

The report, by KPMG, indicates that Australia is experiencing a 13% increase in illicit tobacco trade since plain packaging was introduced there in 2012.

ITMAC said that it encourages the Joint Oireachtas Health Committee, which is currently debating plain packaging legislation, to invite KPMG to give evidence as part of its consultation process.
