Kevin Aherne, Founder, Sage Products Talks About Becoming An Established Irish Brand

Donna Ahern talks to Kevin Aherne, founder, Sage Products Food Company, and Sage Restaurant.

How would you describe your role?

I am the owner and operator of Sage Products Food Company and Sage Restaurant.

What was your first job, and what did you learn from it?

Being from Midleton, my first job was in the Midleton Distillery and I learned the importance of knowing what your role is and what is expected from you in your job.

What do you enjoy most about your current job?

My roles vary from day to week, from the restaurant to the food production company to events. No day in a week would be the same. Having multiple roles brings with it the requirement to be constantly solving problems, which I enjoy.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

I’m not sure. I would usually always have a plan. Business is currently busy and demanding. The focus is on maintaining and building Sage. I would like to see the company become established as a well-known Irish brand. Also, a little time off would be appreciated.

What is your advice to people starting out in the industry?

Get your figures correct from day one, spread your bets, stand up for yourself, and be persistent.

What was your worst job, and what was so bad about it?

I don’t think I’ve ever really hated a job. I have always said in Sage that the kitchen porter’s job is the hardest. I’ve been there, done it. It’s a tough job. It deserves a lot of respect and thanks. Most don’t survive the task. It’s great life training for any parent!

What do you think the government could do to help business in the current climate?

If you are going to create a support for any business, don’t make it complicated and time consuming to apply. Every business is different, but no new business will say no to financial support.

What advertising campaign have you most enjoyed in recent months?

That’s a tough one. The only thing I can think of now is the frog in the Budweiser ad.

With which fictional character do you most identify?

That’s also a tough question. It would have to be the comic book character, Deadpool.

If you could bring back one product that is no longer available in Ireland, what would it be?
The Original Bikers crisps.

What was your favourite grocery brand when you were growing up?

Kellogg’s – probably because of the variety – that little eight-pack of mini cereal. Genius!

Who would come to your ideal dinner party (living or dead)?

Prince with a guitar, Chris Cornell, and Ferdinand Magellan, if he could speak English as I don’t speak Portuguese.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

Don’t make it about the mistake, make it about the recovery.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Nothing makes me happier than spending time with my family, except spending time with my family with an IPA in hand.

How much time do you spend on social media in an average week?

Personal – two hours. Work – six hours.

Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn?

Facebook, but probably more Instagram than any of the above.

Most likely to say?

OK, what’s the plan?

Least likely to say?

Just back from Mass and I’m going to chill and read my book.
