NFRN Express Concern Over Newspread Carriage Charge Review

Independent Newsagents, represented by the National Federation of Retail Newsagents (NFRN) are dissatisfied with the announcement that Newspread is reviewing its carriage charges. Newspread notified its retail partners that the next review of the carriage charge template for the ROI will be implemented from December 1, 2013.

NFRN president, Joe Sweeney commented,"Newspread may have written to us saying the carriage charge template is being reviewed but there is no indication as to what this will mean when the new charging structure takes effect in just a few weeks time.“

Mr. Sweeney said that the review does not comply with the Code of Practice for the Press Industry clause 1.1, which requires notice of at least four weeks before changes to carriage and service charges. He said, "Without telling retailers what the new rate will be, their letter does not provide proper notice."
