Permission Granted For Merchants Quay Redevelopment

Planning permission has been granted to allow The Merchants Quay Shopping Centre in Cork City to undergo extensive redevelopment and refurbishment, including a new entrance onto Patrick Street.

The Evening Echo reports that the landmark shopping centre, owned by Friends First, will have its internal malls relocated so that they are directly alongside Marks & Spencer.

This will allow for a row of units to be developed for larger stores between the new mall and Merchants Quay.

The redevelopment will leave space for a reduced number of larger stores on the ground and first floor, and may see some of Merchant Quay’s main occupiers, which includes Marks & Spencer, Debenhams, Dunnes, Supervalu and Boots, relocated elsewhere within the shopping centre

Once complete it is understood Heatons or Dealz may take over the first-floor unit that faces Patrick Street. [Photo courtesy of William Murphy, 2012]
