RGDATA Urges Utility Companies To Reimburse Retailers For Pay As You Go Services

RGDATA, the representative association for the owners of independent shops, convenience stores and supermarkets today called on utility companies and local authorities to increase payments to retailers for providing pay-as-you-go services in local shops.

Many local shops allow customers to pay utility bills, parking charges and toll charges in-store. By outsourcing payment services in this way, the utility companies and local authorities have made major cost savings. However, local shops must apply a surcharge to cover the cost of providing these services.

According to RGDATA, the payment service providers claim that utility companies are not prepared to increase their payments to retailers to cover the cost of providing this service. Tara Buckley, Director General at RGDATA, said, "Our members will not survive in business if they provide services at a loss. This will close local shops and put their staff out of jobs. It is time that these large state companies like the ESB and Bord Gais addressed this issue and started reimbursing retailers fairly to cover the cost of providing this convenient service to their customers”.
